Fire For Effect

Fire For Effect

I have been trying to get started on this one for some time now. Who knows if I ever will. The basic idea is you are a WWI artillery commander and you need to destroy waves of incoming troops. As you kill them they will give you power ups that give you extra guns, new types of ammo etc. A big part of the game will be making use of secondary explosions. When you destroy enemies they will explode in different ways. A tank will blow shrapnel and cook off rounds. A flame thrower will shoot burning fuel everywhere. A smart player will be able to time these secondary explosions to cause maximum damage.

Platforms

I still need to decide what to write this bugger in. My options are:

Flash

Pros:

  • Quick and easy
  • Available to most browsers

Cons:

  • No true 3D
  • Limited effects
  • Not portable

Java

Pros:

  • OS 3D engines. (Java Monkey Engine)
  • Available to some browsers (with the right java setup)
  • Portable
  • OS Physics (Ballistics) library

Cons:

  • More complicated
  • Longer dev time
  • Possible more setup for players

XNA (MS C#)

Pros:

  • Maybe quicker than Java
  • Can play on XBOX
  • Fast executable

Cons:

  • Not Open Source
  • Only playable on Vista and XBOX360
  • Complicated

Python

Pros:

  • Fast development time
  • OS Physics libraries
  • OS 3D Engine (Panda3d)
  • Portable

Cons:

  • Not playable in browser
  • May requires python installation (look into compiled python)
  • May be slow

C++

Pros:

  • OS Physics libraries
  • OS 3D Engine (Ogre3d)
  • Very fast

Cons:

  • Slowest Dev Time
  • Portable but may neet tweaks for each OS
  • Not playable in browser
