Investing Ideas

Transportation: Gas is getting more expensive and will continue to do so until we run out. Mass transit and transportation will get more and more use. The economy is weakening and food prices are going up. People will be looking for the cheapest way to get around. It might be a good idea to research:

  • Railroads
  • Maritime shipping with a focus on alternative fuels (nuclear, kite etc)
  • Bus lines
  • Trucking companies that use alternative fuels
  • Cruise lines
  • Vacation destinations close to or in the US

It might be a good idea to bet against:

  • Airlines
  • Air based shipping
  • Vacation companies (especially America to Europe)

Technology: We are pretty close to reaching the physical limits of silicon based computing. At this point most chip manufacturers are just adding cores to get better performance. At the same time small embedded systems are becoming easy to buy, create and manufacture. It is feasible for one tinkerer with fairly limited knowledge to create their own computer systems and have them manufactured and sold. Rapid prototyping (home fabrication or "fab") is also taking off. Fab is going to do to the the manufacturing business what MP3's did to the music business. In the not too distant future (10+ years) people will not have to buy most types of consumer electronics from a particular vendor, rather they will design their own and have it built for them either at home or in a manufacturing plant.

Things to research:

  • graphite based computing (graphite mines and mining companies)
  • home fabrication companies
  • circuit board manufacturers
  • custom fabrication shops
  • large manufacturers with systems and operating procedures that would allow them to quickly re-tool to produce...well whatever.
  • embedded systems component manufacturers and sellers specifically sensors, motors, radios and IC's
  • nano-tech

It might be a good idea to bet against:

  • Toy manufacturers
  • Small device manufacturers in the long term. (Apple, Nokia, logitech etc.)
  • Model companies
